How to apply for an Indian Passport
Passport Seva Kendra is not known for being citizen-friendly. For the benefit of our fellow Influxians(and whoever else reads this post), Bhuvana Ashok took up the arduous task of compiling the steps in applying for a passport in India.

Step 2 : You will get a link to your registered email id to activate your account
Step 3 : Once activated, login to the account. Select Applicant Home Tab -> Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport
Step 4: Go for Alternative 2 : To fill the application form online
Step 5 : Fill present address details (State and District)
Step 6 : Passport type -
Apply for : Fresh Passport.
Type of Application : Normal
Type of Passport Booklet : 36 pages
Step 7 : Applicant details: Fill in your details
Is applicant eligible for Non-ECR category?
You can tick Yes if you fall in any of the following categories:
- All persons having educational qualifications of matriculation and above(Need to carry this document for verification)
- All holders of Diplomatic/official Passports
- All GAZETTED Government servants
- All Income-Tax payers (including Agricultural Income-Tax Payees) in their individual capacity. Proof of assessment of income tax and actual payment of income tax for the last one year or copy of PAN card to be insisted upon, and not merely payment of advance tax. However, in most cases as an assessment order is not issued separately by the income tax department, income tax returns which are stamped by income tax authorities can be accepted.
- All professional Degree holders, such as Doctors holding MBBS degree or equivalent degree in AYURVED or HOMEOPATHY, accredited Journalists, Engineers, Chartered Accountants, Cost Accountants, Lecturers, Teachers, Scientists, Advocates, etc.
- Spouses and dependent children of category of persons listed from (b) to (d).
- Seamen who are in possession of CDC or Sea Cadets, Deck Cadets; who have passed final examination of three years B.Sc. Nautical Sciences Courses at T.S. CHANAKYA, MUMBAI; and
- Who have undergone three months Pre-Sea training at any of the Government approved Training Institutes such as T.S.CHANAKYA, T.S. REHMAN, T.S. JAWAHAR, MTI (SCI) and NIPM, CHENNAI, after production of identity cards issued by the Shipping Master, MUMBAI/KOLKATA/CHENNAI. Persons holding Permanent Immigration Visa, such as the visas of UK, USA and Australia.
- Persons possessing two years diploma from any institute recognized by the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) or State Council of Vocational Training (SCVT) or persons holding three years diploma/equivalent degree from institutions like Polytechnics recognized by Central/State Governments.
- Nurses possessing qualifications recognized under the Indian Nursing Council Act. 1947.
- All persons above the age of 50 years.
- All persons who have been staying abroad for more than three years (the period of three years could be either in one stretch or broken) and their spouses.
- All children up to the age of 18 years of age. (At the time of re-issue at the age of 18 years, ECR stamping shall be done, if applicable).

Step 11 : 2 References (Name and Address)
Step 12 : Previous Passport & Other details pls read twice and select either Yes or No
Step 13 : Passport Details Verification (Preview of details filled by you)
Kindly check twice before proceeding.
Step 14 : Self Declaration - Don’t submit the form unless you are sure.
Previous button can be used for editing previous pages, ensure that you have saved all the details filled in each page to prevent data lose.
Once done submit the form and then the application reference number will be displayed
Pay and Schedule Appointment (View Saved/Submitted Applications) - Amount to be paid: Rs.1500/-
Steps for Online Payment (Internet Banking, Debit Card, Credit Card)
- Click the “Pay and Schedule Appointment” link, select the ‘Online Payment’ option, click the Next >> button. Select the appointment quota (i.e. Tatkaal Quota or Normal Quota (required only for Tatkaal ARN cases)), select the desired Passport Seva Kendra/Passport Office, and click the Next >> button.
- Click the Pay and Book Appointment button to redirect to State Bank of India’s Multi Option Payment System (MOPS).
- Select the Mode of Payment (NET BANKING or CARD PAYMENTS), follow the instructions and make payment. Please do not click the Back button or refresh the page, as this may lead to failure of transaction.
- Once the payment is successful, an appointment will be booked automatically for the selected Passport Seva Kendra/Passport Office and the “Appointment Confirmation” screen of PSP Portal will be displayed.
- Take a printout of the Application (ARN) Receipt, and carry it along while visiting the Passport Seva Kendra/Passport Office on the given appointment date/time.
Steps for Challan Payment (Pay in Cash at SBI Branch)
- Click the “Pay and Schedule Appointment” link, select the ‘Challan Payment’ option, click the Next >> button. Generate and print SBI Bank Challan through the Generate Challan button.
- Submit the Challan along with indicated application fee (in cash) at the nearest SBI Branch after at least three hours of Challan generation.
- Payment will be reflected after at least two working days of depositing the fee in the SBI branch. Click the “Track Payment Status” link to track Payment Status.
- If Payment Status is displayed as Success, click the “Schedule Appointment” link, to schedule an appointment.
- Select the Appointment Quota (i.e. Tatkaal Quota or Normal Quota (required only for Tatkaal ARN cases)), select the desired Passport Seva Kendra/Passport Office, and click the Book Appointment button. An appointment (if available) will be booked automatically for the selected Passport Seva Kendra/Passport Office.
- Take a printout of the Application (ARN) Receipt, and carry it along while visiting the Passport Seva Kendra/Passport Office on the given appointment date/time.
